Privacy Policy for RedditShield

Overview

RedditShield is a Chrome extension that filters Reddit content based on user-defined criteria. This privacy policy explains how the extension handles data.

Data Collection

RedditShield does not collect, transmit, or share any personal information. All data processing occurs locally in your browser.

Data Storage

The extension stores the following data locally on your device:

• Filter Lists: Usernames, keywords, subreddit names, and domain names you add to your filters
• Preferences: Settings such as logging status and synchronization preferences
• Badge Counter: Temporary count of filtered items per browser tab

Storage Location

Data is stored using Chrome's Storage API in one of two locations based on your preference:

• Local Storage (chrome.storage.local): Data remains on your device only
• Sync Storage (chrome.storage.sync): Data synchronizes across devices signed into the same Chrome account

When synchronization is enabled, Chrome handles the sync process according to Google's sync policies. RedditShield does not control or access this synchronization mechanism beyond using Chrome's standard API.

Data Usage

The extension uses your filter data solely to:

• Hide posts and comments matching your filter criteria
• Display the count of filtered items in the browser toolbar badge
• Populate the extension popup interface with your current filter settings

No data leaves your browser except through Chrome's built-in sync feature when you enable that option.

Permissions

The extension requires the following Chrome permissions:

• storage: To save your filter lists and preferences
• activeTab: To access and filter content on Reddit pages you visit
• tabs: To update the badge counter on the extension icon

These permissions are used exclusively for the extension's filtering functionality. No data from these permissions is transmitted externally.

Third-Party Access

RedditShield does not:

• Send data to external servers
• Use analytics or tracking services
• Share information with third parties
• Include advertisements or trackers

Data Security

All filter data remains within your browser's storage. The extension does not implement additional encryption beyond what Chrome provides for its storage APIs.

User Control

You have complete control over your data:

• View and edit all filter lists through the extension popup
• Delete filters at any time
• Disable the extension to stop all filtering
• Uninstall the extension to remove all stored data

Uninstalling the extension removes all locally stored data. If sync is enabled, you may need to clear synced data separately through Chrome settings.

Changes to Privacy Policy

Updates to this policy will be posted with a new "Last Updated" date. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
